(7:52 PM CST) Whew!
Damn, I love working out....I just feel really good right now. Thank you, oh endorphine gods...

(5:35 PM CST) Amputee gets donor's arm, hand in groundbreaking surgery (CNN)
I just read this report from CNN's website...awesome stuff. They're attaching a hand and forearm to a guy who lost his own 14 years ago in a saw accident. Read the full article!

(5:02 PM CST) 52 New MP3's added
Yup, got some more. I also redesigned the ftp site because my 4GB hard drive got too full of the Songs directory...those were the only files on that particular hard drive, and it still overflowed. So until I get a 12GB hard drive, the MP3s will be split into A-T and U-Z. Anyway, if you want to know which MP3s are the new ones without having to go through the entire list (impossible), you can sort the file list by date and see which ones are the most recent. I always set the timestamp on the files to the current day that I add them to the archives.

If you're using CuteFTP (which you should be), right click in the right pane (where the mp3's are), and in the menu go to Sorting -> By date. Then the files will be arranged by date, and if you want to have the most recent files at the beginning of the list, right click in the same place, go down to Sorting again and this time click on Descending. The new MP3s are within the Songs A-T, Songs U-Z, Humor, and Soundtracks sections...have fun, and please fill requests! :)

(4:58 PM CST) That little number...
The little number in the date bar is how many days until I and several other people get back...

(4:49 PM CST) WinAmp 2.01

  • Taskbar title-scrolling (for you lovers of minimized windows)
  • A boatload of bugfixes (yes, it remembers the CPU decoder mode now)
  • HTML Playlist generator (so you can print your playlists) -- Playlist->Misc Opts->Generate HTML Playlist
  • New base skin, and plug-in SDKs have been released

You can download it directly from this link.

(6:59 PM CST) Rice Krispies Treats
Okay, you're hungry, you need a snack, but don't know what you want to eat - get Rice Krispies Treats. They are SO awesome...and you can't just eat one, either. You have to eat 2, or 3, or 4. George and I stock no less than 20 of these in our room. You should all do the same. :)

(9:52 AM CST) More FTP Servers
K, there are currently three servers running nearly fulltime:

Louis, How-Ying, Nikhil

If you wish to find out more about how to access these sites, contact the respective site owner, or if you'd like to know how to start your own FTP server, ICQ me.

(9:41 AM CST) New Website
Speaking of the devil, Shang's got a new website up...actually has some useful info this time. :)

(9:34 AM CST) CuteFTP and FTP server
Shang brought this problem to my attention: If you're using CuteFTP to access the FTP server, it may start downloading Buster Poindexter- Hot Hot Hot. The problem is with CuteFTP. On many FTP sites, there is a file called "index" that contains descriptions of all of the files on the server - and CuteFTP is setup to automatically download this file. In this case, it sees Poindexter and goes nuts. To stop this from happening, go to the FTP menu, down to Settings, and then Options. Uncheck the option called "Auto load index files" in the bottom left corner and all should be happy.

(10:25 AM CST) Netmeeting
I've added a new section to the website - Info & Tips. I'll keep odd little bits of information there that you all will find useful, and you don't have to dig through the news archives to get things I've posted in the past (not like any of you would actually do that, but still... :) The most useful thing in there right now is the thing on Netmeeting. Good way to find out what it's all about and what you need to do to get the best performance out of it.

(10:09 AM CST) New SoundBlaster Live drivers
If you're lucky enough to have a SBLive card, you should go to Creative's site and download the new drivers that they have available...if someone would be kind enough to send the file to me I'll post it so that you all don't have to go through the entire required registration process. And no, the file isn't available via FTP. Already checked that. :)

(1:32 PM CST) MP3s
Forgot to mention this, I added about 31 new songs yesterday, and I'll be adding another 20 or so today. Please remember to check out the requests section for songs that I and other people want - feel free to put up your own request. Oh, and there won't be any classical for now....I had everything PERFECTLY setup and then my cd changer began making some really funky noises and kinda stopped working. Woohoo! So now I've got TWO bad CD components - my changer and most importantly, my burner..... :(

(11:33 AM CST) FTP Site
Looks like the ftp server has been working so far - it's already sent out over 1.18GB of MP3s! I'm going to put up all of the classical MP3s, too, but I'll have to play around with it and see how it work - the classical MP3s are on 4 CDs, but I've got a 4CD changer, so that should work out. I'll also create a requests folder for stuff that I want and for stuff that other people want, so we can get our favorites.

(4:37 PM CST) Yahoo! Metropolitan
Some of you are at/near major cities - you might want to check to see if Yahoo has a site for that city. Austin has one, and it makes things a LOT easier. You can search for the type of store that you're trying to find, and it can give you the stores available and the distance to them...try it out! You need to go to the Yahoo cities page. Very useful if there's one for your city. Oh, and you probably will want to make it your default home page (Hit Control+D on your keyboard) - gives you useful info like the day's weather, news items, etc. The perfect start page.

(4:35 PM CST) Sidebar links updated
(12:03 PM CST) Site hosting
I've started to host a couple of sites here, so I'll have links available sometime. I figured that I might as well make the most of my daily $10 payments... :)

(12:03 PM CST) Lists: minor update

(11:29 AM CST) 47 New MP3s
I just added another 47 MP3s to the FTP server, total of 165MB. If you didn't know before, I setup a FTP server last night, and I'll keep it running as long as my computer stays healthy - for specific info about it, talk to me on ICQ and I'll give you the info - note that you must be someone I know. Sorry, everyone else, but I really doubt that there's anyone who I don't know that comes to this page, ever.

Oh, if you want to know which songs are the ones that I just added, just arrange the files in the Songs directory by date, and look at the most recent ones. Simple way to keep up with what I add, I'll just post a notice up here whenever I make a major update to the server. If you have songs that I don't, please follow HY's example and upload! Thanks! :)

(9:26 PM CST) Hunaid's Pic is down
By unpopular request by Tina and Hunaid, I have had to take down the Hunaid image. Sorry guys...you'll have to talk to one of them about obtaining it if you missed it. Damn funny, though.

(8:29 PM CST) USB Video Cameras
Well, several of us have been taking a look at video conferencing - mostly because we've seen how awesome it is over ethernet connections. So, here's the breakdown:

Intel Create & Share USB video camera - $102
Connectix Quickcam VC USB video camera - $100 (Might be a $30 rebate in addition, can anyone confirm that? *CONFIRMED 08/14/98, 12:12AM)
Kodak DVC 323 USB video camera - $136

The Kodak camera is the best, capable of around 30 frames per seconds of video (tv quality & smoothness). The Intel is probably the second best, at 25 fps, and then the Quickcam VC, which does around 16. For the price, the Intel one is the best - you should go over to www.cmpexpress.com to confirm the price and possibly order it. Another note: these are USB cameras. You MUST have USB ports in order to use these - if you have a Pentium II processor, this is not a problem, as all P2's ship with USB ports. You should check manuals/specs for other systems. The Quickcam VC is really only a good choice if you find a signifigantly better price on it - if the difference is more than $30, then perhaps.

Videoconferencing is usually around 15 or so fps, by the way, but the reason why you'd want better fps on the part of the camera is so the software can pick out the best frames to send, for much better video quality. Go get one!!!

On another note - buy a headset, everyone. Costs around $12 from CompUSA or any other decent computer shop, and it's very much worth it - free long distance! Who can beat that? Oh, and it's also proven. Just ask Tonia, Shang, Louis, Steve S., George, Surojit, or myself. It's wonderful - higher quality than telephone, more confortable because there is no handset to hold all the time. Buy!!!

(2:37 PM CST) *sigh*
It's been a long month. Almost everyone that I know has already moved on to their various colleges (including me, by the way, I'll list my info sometime). UT is actually pretty cool, so I'm slowly getting used to it, just need to work on making friends. As you all know (all of you who actually visit websites), Hunaid's been going nutzo with the pictures lately (not a bad thing, it's actually very entertaining). Well, it looks like somebody's decided to fight back. Enjoy, everyone!
