(8:08 PM CST) Spring Cleaning
Okay, the Valentine's thing was getting pretty nauseating, and at the request of several of you, I ditched it and went back to basics. Just a temporary thingy while I do some spring cleaning on this site and spiff it up a bit.

(6:58 PM CST) Desktop Wallpaper
I opened up Photoshop to start working on a new look for this site, but, as always, got instantly distracted - this time by my empty desktop. So I put together a simple image...I make no claims about its artistic value, though. I'd rate it as quasi-decent.

(4:41 PM CST) Hey, cool...
The new WinAmp has a window that's basically a web browser (they call it the winamp browser). You can set it up to show mini pages from amazon.com and rollingstone.com and a few others. When you play a song, the mini browser will automatically make some links relative to that song. I was playing Goo Goo Dolls, and the browser gave me a link to Goo Goo Dolls on Amazon.com's site. It's actually pretty cool...I think it's about time I paid for this program.

(4:26 PM CST) WinAmp 2.10
Nullsoft just released a new version of WinAmp...download now. Here's their list of new features, with some of the cooler ones in bold:
  • New preferences system
  • New install screen stuff (with easier configuration)
  • Improved CDDA plug-in, with auto-play
  • Improved MPEG audio decoding (blip reduction, ID3v1 URL, Shoutcast URL, Shoutcast 1.1 title streaming)
  • Improved MOD/XM/IT rendering (64 bit mixing, sample declicking, less loader bugs, etc)
  • Totally new output driver (faster and more compatible)
  • Language package support
  • Windows font support w/ International characterset capability (optional)
  • Better filetype registration (with options to register on start, etc)
  • Desktop Icon and Quicklaunch adding
  • Customizable DSP/Vis plug-in directories.
  • Playlist editor has more intuitive moving
  • Winamp Browser (for context-sensitive content)
  • A TON of bugfixes (if you've been getting GDI errors this should fix)
(1:05 AM CST) Nostalgia
It's fun to reminisce sometimes...this tech support story brought back a few memories from working down in Sugar Land.
Here is another ISP story... as related by friends who listened in with tech who took the call (and then spammed the floor via Instant Messanger the call just after it happened)

Tech: "Hello, welcome to XXXXXXX, can i have your email address please?"

(gather user info...)

User: "Yes I am trying to logon and I keep geeting a password error."

Tech: "Well what are you entering for the username?"

User: gives his username in a format that was used before our two companies joined.

Tech: "Ah ha... I see the problem, you havent converted yet."

User: "CONVERTED!!!!!! WHAT THE F--- DO YOU MEAN CONVERTED!!!!!" "WHAT KINDA F---ED UP COMPANY IS (name of our ISP)!" "Have I converted.... HELL NO!!!!!! and I plan to stay straight ALL MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!"

at this point the user slammed the phone down and hung up.

(8:43 PM CST) Internet Explorer 5
Well, I've had a hell of a time trying to get the entire thing downloaded, so here's a couple of .zip files with the setup files. You probably don't want to get the version from Tucows, because as BetaNews talks about, they make some customizations and don't have some features.
  • Internet Explorer 5 (The Nikhil Mix) - Download (18.6MB)
  • Internet Explorer 5 (Complete for Win95, Win98, and Windows NT) - Download (70.7MB)

(9:55 AM CST) Crap...
Okay, I was really stupid and managed to get rid of the post that I did from Steve's place. So, I need some help - could you guys check your cache and see if you happen to have a copy of this page that still has that post from Philadelphia in it? You can search for the text "snow" and that should be the right file. Steve, if you still have that temp folder on your desktop (please, please, be lazy enough to not have deleted it already...), talk to me once I get off N/A on ICQ. I'm posting this from my parent's system at home - I'll be in Austin by around 3 p.m. CST.

And on that note, I'm actually looking forward to going back up to Austin this time. Traveling around and seeing how other friends are faring brought a little perspective along. The rest of this semester might be pretty interesting...

(11:49 AM CST) Yikes!
Whoa...my dates are really off. I blame faulty PC clocks. Steve, take a look at the date on your computer - it's a week behind. The last post should say March 17, 1999, and then the one before that was March 2, not February. I haven't been THAT lazy. :)

Is today's date really right? It's already the 20th? Where in the world did March go? The pleasant months always go away so quickly...

(10:52 AM CST) New Stuff
I haven't been in touch with the rest of the world for nearly a week now, so there have been a couple of notable new things going on:

  • Internet Explorer 5 final released - Download
  • Windows 2000 Beta 3 RC1 (Build 2000) released - Anybody find it yet?

(10:41 AM CST) I'm Baaaaaaaaaaaaaccckkk!
Hey, this really has been a great spring break! True to the ICQ away message that my computer (which is still in Austin) is sending out, I'm just bumming around here in Sugar Land, but I'm hoping I'll have more to do once Sini gets in today. Until then, my car and I are going to be sharing some quality time together...wash, polish, and wax. Sugar Land apathy must be taking over again, because I don't feel like trying to make up a new look for this place right now. Enjoy the spirit of Valentine's Day for a little longer... :)

(2:08 AM EST) Hallo!
Greetings from Philadelphia! I actually found a spare moment to post a little bit ... Steve's...err..."occupied" at the moment. :)

I flew up here on Saturday, with no problems - rain might make the ground level seem pretty crappy, but the cloud cover looks absolutely incredible once you fly above it. It was thick enough everywhere that every cloud layer was totally obvious. We would pass through a cloud layer, and all I could see stretching out forever would be white vistas of fluff, covering both the bottom and the ceiling. We would just be flying in our own little box, completely surrounded. I had the strangest urge to jump out and go skiing for a while - some of the hills would be GREAT. Who knows, the cloud cover could probably even support my weight. :)

Anyway, hung around the airport for a little bit while Miriam and Botum came down to pick me up - they're the friends that Shang picked on to go through the hassle of picking me up and dragging me back from the airport. Thanks guys! Just don't let Shang dump anything else on you....

I think Philly was taking pity on the poor Texas boy and went up to around 45°. But the next day, it realized that underneath it all, I had a little sliver of Pennsylvania in me, so it got down to the mid 20's the next day...and, IT SNOWED!!! Lots!! I'm praying that my camera doesn't f*ck up the film roll like it did to the last one, or I'm going to be seriously pissed and buy myself a $400 Canon or Nikon or whatever.

Bryn Mawr, the college is...not a college. It doesn't have a college feel to it at all, but more like what it is - an all girl's school out in the middle of nowhere. I wish I'd taken more pictures of Shang's dorm - it's really - WEIRD. Imagine starting construction on a building, laying out the cement everywhere - and stopping there. That's exactly how it is, unfinished. The structure itself is pretty neat, it's pretty much a maze of sorts, but it could definitely stand some dry wall and painting. The walls still had the mount holes in them, waiting for covering slabs that just aren't going to come. Yuck. At least the people and food are pretty decent - I liked Miriam and Botum, and the food was dressed up more than other places (you know, flower shapes in the mashed potatoes, etc).

What else...watched movies, played with the snow (it collected! A winter wonderland on my spring break! :), complained about Shang's computer, rather, in the poor condition she keeps it in, and...oh! Found out something that just makes a person bow a slowly shaking head down with a hand over one's eyes.

Shang, learn how to use a TV.

I always wondered why she had always said that she only got like one station broadcast. I think she told me that she was in a basement and so therefore the signal probably wasn't strong, enough times that I actually believed it.

Stupid me.

I get there, and out of curiosity, flip on the TV and find, yes, there is only one channel coming in. Isn't that odd. Then I look and she's using an antenna. Okay. Then I flip through more channels, and it starts heading up into the 120's or so. At this point, I was a little suspicious. Broadcast channels can only go up to 62 or so. At this point, I think I could feel the groan of total disbelief starting to make its way to the forefront. Hoping, "No, she couldn't possibly...no way....", I timidly punched up the menu and checked her signal settings.

CATV.

Set for cable. In the prescence of no cable.

Nearly gagging, I change it over to Antenna and go back to the channels. Lo and behold, there IS TV in Bryn Mawr! *gasp!* 10 full stations of broadcast network glory (and 4 PBS stations, which is REALLY weird. Philadelphia is big on Teletubbies, I guess). Fox, WB, NBC, CBS, UPN, ABC...all streaming in with their wonderful saviors of boredom. The picture isn't very clear, but a simple amplified antenna would do the trick nicely.

And the moral of the story? A Shangrila will be a Shangrila no matter where she goes and what she does. Fin.

Abstract thought: I'll switch out this Valentine's day skin for something new. I might go out to Walmart and pick up some aesthetic sense and fix this page up some, but I don't think my check card will cover it...

Abstract thought 2: I LOVE MY CAR!!!! Yes, I will drive it for the camping trip - ANYTHING to be with it. I'll change yer oil anytime, baby.

Enough blithering for now. I'll post the full dirt on Shang (maybe) and Steve either tomorrow or when I get back from the camping trip that better damn well happen.

Hope everyone has enjoyed/is enjoying/will enjoy their spring break! Mine's been GREAT! :)

(12:38 PM CST) Misc bits
It's been a while, hasn't it? The rest of this week comes directly from a toasty place under our feet (read: HELL), so my goal here is to survive the next couple of days. And to make it (better/worse), Shang is here...if you got some oddball messages from me yesterday, you'll know whose satanic hands were at the keyboard.

Recent cool stuff: Can't think of much. Visions of acetylcholine and rubisco dance in my head...

Recent mundane stuff: Finally replaced my completely generic network system with a couple of 3Com cards and a Linksys 100mbit switched hub - I'm getting decent speeds copying from the server, so I can play around with the files a little faster. You guys might get faster downloads now, too - there's a lot less strain on the poor 133MHz chip in that computer. If anyone wants to donate a spare 19 gig hard drive, there's a very needy Nikhil on an ICQ list near you...

Recent somewhat cool stuff: Just remembered about this one - the Union finally got an automated bowling score system. It was giving us some nice eye candy - even though most of the animations were in the name of the holy Gutter Ball. Of course, the lanes are still tilted.........

Recent frightening stuff: Unbelievable...I've seen The Faculty only one less time than Andrew has, and I'm not even a huge proponent of it! It's a good movie - don't let Andrew's raving turn you off from watching it.

And now that I've cleared my concious about not updating for a little while, I'll quietly crumple on my bed...

(6:26 PM CST) A Walk on the Religious Side
Weird...came across two interesting little religion-related items in the last two days. Is it a sign?

Pay homage to the incredible dancing Jesus'!

...and once you're thoroughly inspired...

...go ahead and become an ordained minister!

I hesitated on becoming a minister - something just not kosher about it. :)

If you don't believe me, here are a few quotes from the site:
Welcome! You are about to become an ordained minister with the Universal Life Church. Please be sure to find out about the legal doctrines governing your country and state.

We believe everyone is already a member of the church and is just not aware of it as yet. The Universal Life Church will ordain anyone that asks without question of faith, for life, without a fee. Just select "Become Ordained" to complete the process right here on our World Wide Web site. The church has two tenets: the absolute right of freedom of religion and to do that which is right. Anything else within the law is allowed.

As an ordained minister of the church, you too may ordain new ministers. The Universal Life Church will not stand between you and your God and recognizes that each person must choose his own path. Each person in the ULC is free to follow any path as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others.
