(5:46 PM CST) Matrox G200 Cards Announced
Matrox formally announced the G200 chip today, in two different lines - the Millennium G200 and the Mystique G200. Both are priced at $169 for the 8MB versions of their cards, and both will have the exact same performace, since both use the exact same chip. The advantage of the Millennium G200 is that it will support up to 1800x1440 at 70Hz or 1600x1200 at 90Hz and will have a 250MHz RAMDAC. Quick stuff, to say the least. The Mystique will have slighter lower resolution/refresh rate abilities, due to it 230MHz RAMDAC - but unless you run at high resolutions, the Millennium will not offer enough of a difference to go for it. Another plus of the Mystique is that it has an onboard video out port, to connect to any video device (TV, VCR, camcorder, etc.). For those of you who are on a budget, this card will do surprisingly well for a 3D gaming card. It supports all of the same 3D rendering features of the Voodoo2 and actually reaches frame rates that are competitive to the Voodoo2. Voodoo2 is faster, but the G200 has higher quality. Personally, I'll be getting the Millennium G200 and eventually a SLI Voodoo2 setup because a)I have a monitor that demands stuff like that and b)I want the best of both worlds - Voodoo2 for speed, and G200 for image quality. Tom's Hardware Page has some screen shots in which you can compare the difference in quality between the Voodoo2 and the G200. It's going to be an interesting year...

(2:00 AM CST) People Online Poll Update

You can cast your vote here.

(1:52 AM CST) Tribute to Arthur C. Clarke
Yesterday (yes, I'm late by a day) was the 30th anniversay of the release of Arthur C. Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey - one of the greatest scifi movies I've seen. In honor of this, I spent an incredible $10 at Half-Price Books yesterday (seems like today for me, but I must abide by standards...) and got 2001, 2010, and 2061. I also got the entire Rama series, which is another classic that everyone really ought to pick up sometime. I know what I'll be reading in English for these last weeks...

If anyone wants to borrow any of these, I'd be more than happy to lend it out to you. Just an afterthought.

(1:39 AM CST) Seinfeld v. Superbowl
Damn...I better not miss this one. The final episode of Seinfeld is going to make NBC a very happy company - read the following, from CNN:
"The program is likely to fetch between $1.5 million and $1.7 million for a 30-second advertisement, said the sources, who spoke Wednesday on condition of anonymity.

The price is below the $2 million commitment that NBC was said to have received from two buyers a few months ago when the commercial time was first made available. But it still easily surpasses the $1.3 million benchmark set by the Super Bowl football telecast in January."

(12:01 AM CST) Sad State of Servers
What the hell is going on with downed servers, or is WT.net pulling some weird ass no-our-DNS-server-won't-let-you-go-there-today crap? Currently, Winamp.com, 3dfxmania.com, and Louis' public board server are all seemingly nonexistant...somebody please tell me it's just something on my end...

(11:27 PM CST) Am I finally slacking off?
Good news - no. Actually, I'm working on another little subsection for this site, so I haven't had time to do much in the way of updates today. Being at lab until 5:30 didn't help much, either. But to add something interesting today's stuff, go over to Intel's site for a couple (85) screen shots of Final Fantasy VII.

(10:34 PM CST) Hehehehe...cast your vote!
People's magazine online has been hosting an online version of its "Most Beautiful People" poll on its website to see who the web thinks is the most stunning figure alive today. The answer that has returned over 43,000 votes? Hank the Angry, Drunken Dwarf. He's a guy who comes on the Howard Stern show (not surprising), and people have started something of a campaign to vote him in as the most beautiful person. His nearest competitor is (also not surprising) Leonardo DiCaprio, who got a measly 5,300 votes. See the full story from ZDNet, or cast your own vote on Pathfinder.

10:07 PM CST) Borland changes name
Here's something interesting...
Borland International Inc. is changing its name to Inprise Corp. CEO Del Yocam said the company will announce a series of new products over the next few months that will "accelerate our growth in the enterprise market."

(4:10 PM CST) Microsoft Plus! 98
Microsoft is doing it all over again, but this time Plus will have more than 10KB worth of useful features (Plus95's only cool things were high color icons, full window drag, and font smoothing). Here's a direct quote from Microsoft's press release:
"Compressed Folders is an archive tool that lets users save disk space by simply dragging and dropping files. Compressed folders look and act just like regular folders in Windows, but offer up to 90 percent compression. In addition, Direct3D® API-accelerated Organic Art screen savers provide users with dynamic and exciting computer art. Popular games include Microsoft Golf 1998 Lite, the intense Spider Solitaire and the fast-paced Lose Your Marbles™ by SegaSoft Networks Inc."

(3:43 PM CST) Häagen-Dazs Coffee Mocha Chip
Mmmmmmmm....ice cream. This is a new flavor from them. Tastes awesome, mostly because it has these small mocha chips in the coffee ice cream that taste exactly like a mocha frap from Starbucks (yes, I know that this shouldn't sound amazing that they taste the same, but in a lot of cases, things taste better from the retail food shop). So go get it now!
George was kind enough to let me know that the font was too small, so I've increased it overall...if this is still too small or even too big for anyone, send me a message on ICQ.
(7:32 PM CST) .mp3Producer 2.0 from Opticom has finally been released. It's essentially the best MP3 encoder available right now...anyone have it yet? If so, talk to me. I want it.

(7:08 PM CST) ID4 Screenshots
K, found the screen shots, courtesy of The Digital Bits. You can go directly to the screen shot page if you don't want to see the latest news.
(6:57 PM CST) WOOHOO!!! Divx loses again!!!
Just noticed this little tidbit from CMPnet...Paramount has officially announced support for DVD, a massive change from its former backing of Divx technology. Paramount was one of the few companies that continued to hold out over DVD, which leaves Fox. But it seems that Fox will also come over to the DVD side, but it isn't official yet. Someone, somehow, was able to get a hold on screenshots of Independence Day - but from DVD, not Divx. Check out the whole story at CMPnet's article.
I'll add the site with the Independence Day pics as soon as I find it.
(6:43 PM CST) Tom's Hardware Page update
Tom's Hardware Page has been updated again, this time with a review of 2D, 3D, and 2D/3D video cards. The most interesting part is comparisons of image quality between different cards - it's true, Voodoo2 isn't the ultimate in quality. Just speed - but who really cares about speed anyway? :)
(5:05 PM CST) Chip sales to slump, then recover
CNet released a news item that is interesting for those of us who regularly buy computer stuff...it seems that the Asian market crisis will continue to bring prices down this year, but "prices could be fairly flat, rather than falling, next year." If you're going to be getting a new computer this summer, I'd wait as long as possible before getting it, because prices are going to be awesome. Good for me, because I'm going to need all the help I can get with my bank account....
(4:30 PM CST) 40 year old journalist playing Quake?
National Public Radio featured a commentary on Quake...I wonder if I could blow him to bits if I played him. Anyone else think this could be Louis in 20 years?
(12:33 PM CST) Most annoying page in the world
No, it isn't Bernard's page, although his page is where Steve and Louis got most of their ideas from. I proudly present - SHIT, produced by Louis Wang and Steven Sbar. Highly recommended if you want to get dizzy. :)
(11:58 AM CST) Mad Psycho (Ramez) Attacks Michael :)
Ramez went psycho in Bio today...I realize that isn't really news, but he did it with a slightly different twist today. He made comparisons of himself to the many children who seem to love pulling out their guns in schools around America, and proceeded to *ALMOST* smash Michael's head with his backpack, pausing only at the last moment and returning to his seat.

My reaction? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha...
(8:19 PM CST) Voodoo2 on slow systems
Voodoo Extreme released a comparison of computers with Voodoo2 and Voodoo...as expected, there isn't much to be gained unless you have at least a 200MHz CPU. But if you want to get the most out of the Voodoo2, look to getting at least a P2-333MHz chip - then will the card really perform.
(6:57 PM CST) Yes, I might turn thrifty (!)
Well, I just got through writing a check to New Dimensions for $1600...I think I'm now officially a cheapskate. Good thing I turned cheapskate AFTER I bought Prom and Prograd tickets and rented the tux. No longer will I ever spend money without a second thought, no longer will I ever again enjoy the spur of the moment $200 cash withdrawal from the ATM. I WILL restrain myself from buying every new toy that comes out on the market, including that wonderful car audio system I had all planned out. *sigh*

If not having money is making me sad, wouldn't that contradict the old saying that money is not what makes people happy?
(4:56PM CST) Decimation on Battle.net
Steve, Louis and I just got done beating the crap out of another 3 player team on Battle.net. After an early attack killed off one of the enemies thanks to a joint effort between Steve and myself, we all settled down and began our building phase. While the remaining players valiently attempted assaults on our bases, our superior combination of Zerg, Protoss, and Terran led to an overwhelming victory. One particularly memorable site was a caravan of 8 siege tanks on the way to destroy Louis' base...I think that one of his drones was the worst casualty in that attack... =) Look for screenshots of the battle on Louis' page.
(3:24PM CST) Hehehe...Microsoft is just out of luck this year...
Most people have already heard about how Windows 98 crashed while Bill Gates was demonstrating it at Comdex, but I happened upon this little gem that isn't quite so widely known. It seems that Microsoft held a raffle at the trade show, and the winner would receive a free copy of the OS upon its release. The winner? A woman who works for the Justice Department.
(3:02PM CST) Starcraft Over USB?
For those of you with USB ports on your computer, Peracom revealed an ethernet adapter that plugs into one of your USB ports and has a RJ45 jack to connect the rest of the LAN. Interesting, but not really useful, since it does cost $149, versus the $50-$80 for a good 3COM ethernet adapter. On the other hand, if you're running out of PCI slots, this could be what lets you do SLI with Voodoo2. *drool*....
(2:33PM CST) New devices archive terabytes
There will be a few new interesting little things coming out next month, like a tape drive from a company called Emass that will store up to 28 terabytes of data. (!) And the price is surprisingly reasonable - a mere $30,000 will give you all the storage space you'll need to archive most of the MP3s the world has to offer...
For those of you who'll be purchasing a DVD-RAM drive this summer or sometime in the future, Pioneer will be making a DVD jukebox, supporting up to 4 DVD-ROM drives and 2 removable 50-disk magazines to hold up to 470GB of data. Performance is awesome, as well - the drive can switch between discs in 6 seconds, and will transfer around 3.5Mbps. Hope you're going to a cheap college if you buy this, though - it'll cost you $15,000.
Site redesign
Adobe targets May release for Photoshop 5.0
Looks like Adobe finally realized that people really do make more than one mistake while working with graphics - version 5.0 will have multiple level undo's, a feature that has been standard in most other programs. Another nice little feature will be the ability to re-edit text that has been placed on the canvas - no more hassles with erroneous text that you can't get rid of. Finally!
Dolly the cloned sheep gives birth
Well, as a testament to the accuracy of the cloning, Dolly was able to give birth to a perfectly normal female goat...
Porn publisher has gesture for Florida neighbors
You gotta love the US - only here is such public declaration possible. Al Goldstein, of the magazine, "Screw" decided to make a small addition to his yard..."a large white statue of a human hand with its third finger extended". If only I could put that in front of the school...
